Undergraduate Research Posters at the Capitol

February 9-10, 2020

The inaugural Undergraduate Research Posters at the Capitol will be held at the Florida State Capitol Complex in downtown Tallahassee. At this event, up to four undergraduate researchers from each university and college across the state will present their research in a poster format; they will also have the opportunity to interact with legislative members from their representative districts. Our main mission in hosting this event is to encourage the visibility and viability of undergraduate research, while also providing high-achieving students a space to engage directly in the political process.

Day of Event Additional Information (February 10, 2020)

Parking

  • Parking for the event is available downtown, if needed. If you will need to park downtown, we suggest parking in Kleman Plaza, 306 S Duval St, Tallahassee, FL 32301. This is a parking garage located within walking distance to the Capitol. Parking starts at $2.00 for the first hour and increases $1.00 per hour up to a maximum of $7.00.

Poster Presentation

  • Each institution will be responsible for printing their students’ posters. We will be providing tripod easels with a cardboard backing that can accommodate a poster of 48” x 36”

  • Please be at the Capitol by 9 AM to help us set up for the poster presentations, which officially begin at 10:00 AM

  • Everyone will need to pass through security to enter the Capitol building

  • Dress Code

    • Please dress at least business casual for the poster presentation session, but preferably business professional

  • We will be making a schematic of the poster areas in the Capitol Building closer to January so that schools can see where they will be presenting

Lunch

  • There is a Cafe in the Capitol building on the north side of the Lower Level. In addition, there is a snack cafe on the 10th Floor that has ample food options available. Unfortunately, we cannot give accurate information on pricing at this time.

  • There are additional options for restaurants near the Capitol in the downtown area. Some suggestions include:

    • Metro Deli, 104 S Monroe St, Tallahassee, FL 32301

    • The Egg Cafe & Eatery- Plaza Tower, 300 S Duval St, Tallahassee, FL 32301

    • Goodies Eatery, 116 E College Ave, Tallahassee, FL 32301

  • Remember that each institution will be responsible for each students’ meals

Tours of the Historic Capitol Museum

  • We have secured two time slots for students and their staff accompaninent to tour and view the Historic Capitol Museum. We will have one group at 1:30 and one group at 2:30; each tour will last roughly an hour. Please note that each group can only hold up to 30 students each, so in the Confirmation survey, please be sure to indicate your preference accordingly.

  • Our thinking is that with these two tour groups at different times, one group of students can attend their representative meetings while the other tours the Historic Capitol and then can switch at 2:30.

Departure

  • There is no official closing event, and schools can schedule their departures after the tours/representative meetings conclude, as they see fit.
